BloggerView #7: André Ribeirinho

Like I promised last week, here is BloggerView n.º 7, with André Ribeirinho, author of, and, on his own words, “an entrepreneur who has a passion for the Web (and for wine) he has been playing with Adegga.” I hope you enjoy his bloggerview.

1.When did you start blogging? What were the main reasons that take you start blogging?
André Ribeirinho (AR): I began blogging in 1999 using my Linux area at the university. At the time, I didn’t call it a blog but a homepage.
It was a place where I regularly posted things I thought were relevant and organized them in reverse chronological order. I started blogging because I wanted to organize some links I came across and at the same time share them with some people who might be interested.

At the time I edited the html of that page each time I wanted to “post” something new. Later, in December 2002 I used a blogging tool ( for the first time. It was also the first time that I thought about having a blog to share some subject with a specific audience. I knew that IKEA was thinking of opening a store in Portugal and that many people where interested in this, so I setup a blog about it – ikealisboa blog. It included IKEA news and some pictures from the construction site. But IKEA didn’t like it that much and sent me a Cease and Desist letter. I ended the blog but posted about this in my blog which continued to be visited by people who wanted to know about IKEA in Portugal. Some people sent me their CVs although I clearly stated that I was not working for IKEA.

It was a very valuable experience for me because for the first time I had contact with the inability of a corporation the size of IKEA to deal with its online communication. If you googled “Ikea lisboa” when I first created the blog, only one link was getting relevant information about ikea in lisboa and that was the ikealisboa blog. With this I got to know the fear that a corporation full-of-money but without an online strategy got from seeing a one-man run simple blog get more attention than their regular messaging channel.

2. What were your reasons to christen your blog as you did?
AR: Delaranja has a meaning in Portuguese because laranja means orange in Portuguese and “de” means “of”. So one could say “blog of orange” like a section of an orange. The idea behind was to serve as a place where several of my Web projects (sections) are gathered. Besides blog another subdomain is also used ( – my girlfriends blog) which basically means “orange color”. Curiously because I didn’t exactly named the blog (just used people linking there usually use as the name of the link which helps me differentiate in the middle of other links to blogs.

3. Do you have any specific goals or objectives you want to achieve with your blog? What are they?
AR: Just as when I started, the blog is still a place to organize things I find interesting and share them with people who might be interested. However, nowadays it has more added value to me. It has since become a professional tool that I use to connect to other people who share the same professional interests as me. I connect to all of them through posts, comments and trackbacks and I use links to contribute to make other people’s content relevant.

4. In your opinion, what role could blogs play in the future, for instance at companies or at schools?
AR: As people we have been naturally sharing information for ages with other people. The internet has provided a new media to let people have that behavior even if their not physically together. Blogs have brought people closer to that new media by making it extremely easy for people to write and publish content on the Internet. Since the Internet is a place where every site is just a click away and is easily found on Google, everyone can leverage their opinion and in some cases can have a real impact in a kind of reach that previously only tv and radio could have.

5. What do you think will be the future of blogs over the next couple of years?
AR: I agree with the idea that blogs are on the edge of content. This happens because instead of just being readers of some centralized news source (like CNN) where every one goes to read the same news, people are now also being authors and publishing their own content. This has led them to rely more on less established news sources that instead provide them with the news the way people want then and when people want them. But finding those sources can be a hard time and understanding how relevant is a certain source is trick thing to do. So I think that a lot of services and tools will be available for people to customize the way they interact with this new media and navigate their way through the kind of content that they are much more interested in and thus much more likely to like to contribute too. This means that we will have more blogs and more content but at the same time better tools to help people make a choice better choice.

6. How many feeds do you have on your news aggregator? What news aggregator do you use? Why?
AR: Bloglines was my first feed aggregator. I used it for 1 year and I really liked the fact that I was able to change computers and still be able to at what was going on. A few months ago I changed to NetNewsWire (Mac feed reader) because it makes much more easy to control and manage the lists of feeds. As I added more feeds to the list I also slowly stopped reading other feeds that were on the feedreader but I never opened. On my vacation I spent a lot of time without feed reading and I came back with the idea that I can reduce my feed list by 1/3 and still be able to get much of what I’m really interested in. So I have a lot of feeds I subscribe too but I’ll be cleaning that list soon.

7. What do you think about RSS? What role do you think RSS can play in future, for instance in the relation between government and citizens?
AR: RSS is double-sided sword. Technologically it makes it easier to build simple cross-website communication tools and services. As an interface for users to get access to content it sucks. In theory people could build their own view of the information (like I do on Netvibes) but reality is harder and very few people have the time or the knowledge to do that. When I explain people that RSS is just a subscription alert system that they can use to receive an alert each time their favorite newspaper published a news item I get this reply: Oh good! How can I use that? and suddenly become interested in what RSS can do for them.

8. What do you think is the most important thing happening in the Web, now? Why?
AR: The Social Revolution. A few years ago I used to spend at least 30 to 60 minutes each day uploading photos and making comments to other users photos on a portuguese photosharing website called It was a simple (yet addictive) website to which I was very emotionally connected. When the owner said that it would no longer be able to keep the site running I was shocked and sad. I then realized that for the first time I was going to miss some of the virtual relationships I had been making online because of that service. So while was a photosharing website it’s main interest was the interaction with other people, or it’s social network.

What more general Social Networks (like hi5 or MySpace) have shown is that more than anything people want to be connected to each other and interact in every possible way. By integrating this social aspect into a Web product one can adds another dimension that was not previously present.

I have been playing with this subject for a while in a project called Adegga ( Adegga is a service where people can manage their wine cellars and share their love for wine with other people they trust. Moreover, Adegga helps people in buying wine by providing
a social context to their decision process. Giving an example: imagine a person is browsing a list of Portuguese red wines because he’s looking to buy a bottle of good wine for a special occasion. What if that list of wines included additional social information as which of that person’s friends own some of those wines or have tasted and rated some of them. This would clearly help that person make a better choice. Not just by providing more product information but by giving the person an implicit recommendation from the people that the person trusts. This is social relevance and people like that.

9. Beside blogs, do use other social software, like Flickr,, Diigo, LinkedIn, or any other?
AR: Due to professionally related tasks I try some of these applications at least once. On a more regularly basis I use hi5 (, LinkedIn, Flickr (, SAPO Fotos ( and sometimes ( and SAPO Tags (

10. Do you think it would be important to have an event like LIFT or Reboot in Portugal? Why?
AR: Every event that plans to make people get together and discuss such relevant subjects as innovation and technology and their relation to society is very welcome. Diversity and choice are both good things and whether people choose to go to Reboot (, LIFT ( or upcoming SHiFT ( what matters is that people are creating their own projects and making their contribution in some way to the society we all live in. If by having an event like that, Portugal can benefit from the exchange of ideas then the time spent organizing such a meeting is certainly justified and we all win.

Jardins Digitais: Tal como tinha referido neste blog, há algumas semanas, confirma-se que, num projecto-piloto que irá decorrer até Junho de 2007, irão existir em Lisboa cerca de 20 espaços, entre miradouros, jardins e parques, com acesso à Internet wireless, livre e gratuito. Esperemos que as pessoas aproveitem esta iniciativa.
  3. MIT: Segundo alguns órgãos de comunicação social portugueses (, parece que o acordo de parceria entre o MIT e o Governo Português irá ser assinado no próximo dia 11 de Outubro. Não existindo para já (que eu tenha conhecimento) uma confirmação por parte do MIT, resta-nos esperar por dia 11 para a concretização deste tão aguardado acordo.
  4. 11 de Setembro: Infelizmente não consegui ver a totalidade do documentário “Loose change” sobre a suposta conspiração do 11 de Setembro. Pelo que pude ler, sei que existem muitos críticos a este documentário. Pessoalmente prefiro uma lógica, nem 8 nem 80, ou seja, não temos que acreditar cegamente no que nos querem “vender”, quer no caso da suposta verdade da Administração dos EUA e dos principais media americanos, quer na teoria da conspiração do “Loose change”. A verdade é que existem alguns pormenores passíveis de serem questionados na versão oficial, e para todos os efeitos não seria a 1.ª vez que a Administração dos EUA mentiria ao mundo. Ainda se lembram dos motivos evocados para invadir o Iraque?

Registo de domínios .PT

O Karlus ( reforçado pelo Pedro ( já tinham referido que aparentemente o processo de registo de domínios .PT tinha sido liberalizado, sem terem informado ninguém.

Pelo que é possível observar no site, onde é possível registar-se um domínio .PT, entre outros acabados em .PT, esta informação não se confirma. Muito pelo contrário, é possível ler em destaque:

O Registo de nomes de domínio sob .PT obedece a um conjunto de regras administrativas, técnicas e jurídicas que visam:

  • uma eficaz gestão do espaço de endereços Internet sob .pt;
  • a não utilização abusiva e o registo especulativo dos nomes de domínio.

Sendo que as regras do registo de domínios .PT (, reforçam esta ideia:

Podem registar directamente nomes de domínio sob .pt as pessoas colectivas, as
entidades públicas, os empresários em nome individual, os profissionais liberais e
ainda os requerentes ou titulares de marcas, apresentadas pela via nacional,
comunitária ou internacional.

Neste caso concreto, as regras em vigor a partir de 1 de Março de 2006 em nada alteraram a legitimidade necessária para o registo dos domínios .PT, apenas (o que já não é assim tão pouco) , salvo erro, liberalizaram o registo de domínios até então proibidos como ou ví, entre outros.

O que significa que, muito provavelmente, a maioria dos registos de domínios .PT estão a ser efectuados com base nos pedidos de registo de marca, submetidos no INPI, o que do ponto de vista regulamentar é totalmente legal.

No entanto, tal como referi anteriormente, no site, é explicito que o registo especulativo dos nomes do domínio não é permitido.

Neste contexto, irá a FCCN tomar alguma medida para evitar que uma mesma entidade registe uma série de domínios, como por exemplo:

BloggerView #6: Mónica André

There’s been a while, almost 6 moths, since my last bloggerview, last February, but it’s an initiative that I want to keep alive. So, this week bloggerview is with Mónica André, the author of “B2OB – Barriers and Opportunities to Organizational Blogging”, available at On her blog, like it’s description says, she talks about organizational blogs and their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats on today’s organizations. Enjoy her bloggerview.

1. When did you start blogging? What were the main reasons that take you start blogging?
Mónica André (MA):
By 2002, I had been following conversations about blogs in Knowledge Board ( and started reading some members’ blogs to try and understand the potential they where talking about. I’ve joined to my readings some papers that where starting to appear in conferences and journals. My interest was growing and I started my first blog ( in July 2003.
My interest at first was exploring the tool as a means of keeping information resources for (at the time) ongoing research about «the role of information in expatriation cycle». It acted also as an extended communication channel with my thesis supervisor. Soon it became the extension of my geographical limited conversations about the potential use of blogs in organizational settings (, when the majority of bloggers in Portugal seemed only concerned about audience numbers and impact of blogs in the mediascape.

2. What were your reasons to christen your blog as you did?
The names of those two blogs reflected the starting point for their creation. Blog da Tese for research purposes and not directly related with blogging and b2ob was short for Barriers and Opportunities to Organizational Blogging (latter I understand that by having call it b2ob was sometimes misleading: people thought that it was about business to business).

3. Do you have any specific goals or objectives you want to achieve with your blog? What are they?
MA: Maintaining the blogs is a way of scanning the environment and bringing distance closer. Mainly it’s a way of acknowledging what others are doing, having the opportunity of engaging in conversations about topics that interest me, being found by people who have same interest and/or overlapping interests, and sharing with others that might have interest in the same topics as a way of growing and being part of a wider community, regardless of geographical constraints.

4. In your opinion, what role could blogs play in the future, for instance at companies?
MA: The future of blogs is the present of the visionaries. In some companies the future of blogs is already here: they trust their employees, they understand that it’s nothing they can impose nor restrict. People always had conversations but the kind that where out of the organizational systems. Now blogs, an ever growing simpler tool, give the companies the opportunities to see what the conversations are about and to bring it inside the organizational infosphere. Within the conversations, the narratives of skills, of networks, and of knowledge needed to make the organizations constant adaptations to the environment in order to innovate.

5. What do you think will be the future of blogs over the next couple of years?
MA: We are assisting to the massification of additional web tools with individual and social characterists (web2.0), the growing offer of free server space, the growth in worldwide interaction, and the improvement in communication and information infrastructures allowing the needed mobility between people/information and physical/digital boundaries. Blogs are fostering dissemination, empowering and making each one of us responsible for what we do (and for what we don’t). The future is not homogeneous: for some it will mean widely use of blogs, for others it will mean new infoscapes, for others it will be the windows that allow the crossing between physical and digital worlds… We still have a lot to understand about the opportunities and uses of blogs and they sure do not seem to be in a descendent phase!

6. How many feeds do you have on your news aggregator? What news aggregator do you use? Why?
MA: I scan around 200 feeds, divided by blogs, library items, Associations, papers, and news. I’ve been using Bloglines because it satisfies my needs. I’ve tried others but didn’t see added value to justify loosing my history of marked entries in the feeds.

7. What do you think about RSS? What role do you think RSS can play in future, for instance in the relation between government and citizens?
MA: At the individual level, in order to have time for scanning, I could not find time to visit all the sites (and databases searches) I needed to feel the pulse of my interest fields. So it allows easy collecting, analysis and editing of individual information needs.
At the organizational level, allows for easy collection, analysis and editing of disperse information for the organizational information system. It’s also less intrusive than mailing lists that keep overloading mailboxes and are difficult to get to when individuals need to recover the information they know they have.
Like other normative rules it has the benefit to keep playing an increased role in the dissemination of information according to rules that can be setup by the user (organizations, individuals or automation), to allow for faster scanning and to bring the information we want to us.

8. What do you think is the most important thing happening in the Web, now? Why?
MA: The shift from content on the web, to people on the web. They are adding the needed face to the creators of the information. The more people express their interests in a visible way, the more they grow trust. They are crossing the digital to meet, they are organizing events, they are helping each other, they are organizing in spontaneous ways, and they are participating in the shape of the web.

9. Beside blogs, do you use other social software, like Flickr,, Diigo, LinkedIn, or any other?
MA: I’ve been trying out many other social software and tools, and keep a list of some of them at I use them in an ongoing need according to the situations and projects I’m involved in. In my canvas (blogs) you can see that some of them are used (flickr,, bloglines, skype, and technorati). I value some of them more than others. LinkedIn is one of those that I found that I’ve been using much less, and Orkut I quit going in there. I guess it’s because they are closed spaces that I associate with the organizational confine settings.
In the project teams I belong to, there is a growing (although reluctant) use of social software. I guess it is because some team members’ skills where not grown out of using some of them in their daily routines, and it becomes a too big effort to learn them just for the project sake.

10. In your opinion, what role could blogs, wikis and other social software play in the future, inside organizations?
MA: They will allow for a interweave information space ecology.

A nova web e os media

Na semana passada, quando andava à procura do livro “La revolución de los blogs” de José Luiz Orihuela (infelizmente acho que ainda não existe, à venda, em Portugal) encontrei acidentalmente o livro “Geração Blogue” de Giuseppe Granieri ( Apesar de já ter ouvido qualquer coisa sobre este livro, confesso que não me despertava grande interesse, pelo menos um interesse imediato. Porém ao folhear o livro, encontrei, por acaso, um parágrafo, que considero ser uma análise muito pertinente à situação em que se encontram os media face à nova web.

“Parece um paradoxo, mas é como a história de Pedro e o Lobo. Os próprios media, depois de terem gritado “O lobo! O lobo!” durante anos, procurando convencer-nos de que a Rede estava a trazer modificações substanciais à nossa sociedade (porque tinham sido inventados os portais, porque se podia ligar uma webcam ao computador, porque Wall Street descia), têm hoje muita dificuldade em compreender que algo aconteceu realmente. E se alguém o intui, como Pedro quando viu mesmo o lobo, quase ninguém acredita nele.”

Não sei se a melhor analogia será mesmo a história de Pedro e o Lobo, mas não deixa de ser verdade que depois de anos a fio, a falarem sobre as modificações que a web estava a provocar nas nossas sociedades, actualmente os media têm grandes dificuldades em admitir e assimilar que a mesma web esteja a provocar grandes mudanças na sua própria área, adiando-as o mais que podem.

Nem por coincidência, “The Bivings report”, na sequência de um estudo que realizou a cerca de 100 jornais norte-americanos, publicou recentemente 2 artigos com várias sugestões para os jornais poderem melhor o seu serviço:

  1. Utilizarem tags;
  2. Disponibilizarem feeds rss com os artigos completos, suportados em anúncios;
  3. Trabalharem em parceria com websites sociais externos, como o;
  4. Fazerem ligações para entradas de blogs relevantes para a notícia;
  5. Livrarem-se dos registos;
  6. Fazerem parcerias com bloggers locais;
  7. Disponibilizarem formas alternativas de aceder aos conteúdos;
  8. Modernizarem os seus aspectos gráficos;
  9. Aprenderem com o Craiglist
  10. Adaptarem o conteúdo para telemóveis e PDAs
  11. Permitir que os utilizadores comentem as notícias;
  12. Melhorar as funcionalidades de pesquisa;
  13. Usar o HTML correctamente;
  14. Focar nas notícias locais e regionais;
  15. Abrirem os seus arquivos;
  16. Providenciarem versões multi-lingua;
  17. Disponibilizarem conteúdo suplementar, sobretudo os conteúdos de suporte à produção às notícias;
  18. Publicarem todas as cartas recebidas pelos editores;

Novo design e novas funcionalidades

Desde 1 de Setembro, que o lisbonlab tem um novo design e algumas funcionalidades novas.

Como se poderão lembrar, ainda há alguns meses mudei o template deste blogue, numa alteração radical de aspecto gráfico, suportada em alguns plugins “AJAXianos“.

Apesar de continuar a gostar do template “SevenGreen” tenho de reconhecer que, para mim e para o tipo de “blogging” que faço, ele tem 3 deficiências:

  • Antes de mais, o template “SevenGreen” foi concebido dentro da filosofia de outros templates como o Hemingway (, que na minha opinião, preconizam a evolução da tradicional apresentação dos blogues, dos 5 ou 10 posts por ordem cronológica, do mais recente para o mais antigo para um maior destaque de, no máximo, os últimos 2 textos publicados. No entanto esta evolução apenas funciona com bloggers, que raramente publiquem mais do que um post por dia, normalmente artigos extensos. Ou seja, com o template anterior, quando publicava mais de um post por dia, ou mesmo, 2 posts, em 2 dias seguidos, havia sempre o risco do post mais antigo passar despercebido aos leitores que se deslocam ao website (acredito que ainda existe muita gente que leia blogues sem usar agregadores/leitores de conteúdos).
  • Por outro lado, o template “SevenGreen” não primava pela usabilidade, quer pela colocação da navegação secundária, de extrema importância num blogue na parte inferior do ecrãn mas também pela existência de alguns pormenores pouco intuitivos para o utilizador, através do recurso a AJAX.
  • Por último, e mais importante, o template “SevenGreen” era demasiado impessoal.

Assim sendo, tomei a decisão de voltar à fórmula inicial, criando para esse efeito um novo template, com uma série de novidades que apelidei de GreenLisbon.

Em primeiro lugar, este novo template está optimizado para uma resolução de 1024 x 768 pixeis, uma vez que acredito que a maioria dos utilizadores usa esta resolução. Não tenho conhecimento de estudos sobre a resolução dos monitores em Portugal, mas nos EUA, de acordo com o Jakob Nielsen ( apenas 17% utiliza monitores com uma resolução 800×600 pixeis.

De seguida há assinalar a implementação de 4 plugins novos:

E a integração com a minha conta do coComment (, que permite aos leitores do lisbonlab, acompanhar os meus comentários na blogosfera.

Por último, mas não menos importante, finalmente criei um logótipo para a marca “lisbonlab” e o respectivo favicon.

Naturalmente, o template “LisbonGreen” ainda não está totalmente concluído, faltando limar algumas pequenas arestas, nomeadamente corrigir pequenas correcções no css e criar uma folha de estilo para o modo de impressão, mas pelo menos é desde já XHMTL 100% válido.
