In the last couple of weeks there’s been a lot of hype about Microsoft and its newest strategy – Live, Windows Live, Office Live, and the new portal Live.com. Based on the information available at the moment, everyone assumes that Live.com will be the center of this new strategy.
Many people think that one of those days, probably in 2006, we will be presented with a "windows.live.com", a "office.live.com" and "so_on.live.com". Actually, Live.com is the only service available related with the Live strategy, a customizable homepage to face, I think, MyYahoo.
After trying Live.com I have to ask Microsoft if this is the best that you can do, regarding customizable homepages and web-based services. How is it possible that someone could define Live.com as his Home Page?
If you like the idea of having your own homepage customizable with your preferences, and you dislike MyYahoo or Google Homepage, I would like to introduce you Netvibes at Netvibes.com.
First of all Netvibes has a great design, clean and minimal. But more important, Netvibes has a lot of good features, which you can customize:
- An excellent feed reader (importing OPML included);
- A Web Search using one of this search engines: Google, Yahoo, IceRocket, Wikipedia;
- Weather forecast;
- Webnotes;
- Gmail integration (displays the last unread messages at your Gmail account)
- Bookmarks with tagging;
- Writely documents Integration (a fantastic tool available at www.writely.com);
- Flickr Integration;
- A Price Watch;
In the future, this French team expects to add other features in work like:
- To do lists;
- Feeds research;
- Color themes;
- Etc.
If case of doubts, give it a go, I’m sure that you will be easy convinced.
P.S.1: Netvibes works perfectly with Firefox, in contrast with Live.com, which has several bugs.
P.S.2. Netvibes has a portuguese interface.
